Herschel Savage was born Hershel Cohen in New York City and actually was looking for a mainstream acting career, that’s why he studied acting with renowned actress and acting teacher Uta Hagen and Stella Ad respectively. However he ended up in the porn industry, making pornographic films for which he is considered one of the biggest stars of the golden age of porn in the 70’s and 80’s and appeared in classic films such as “ Debbie Does Dallas”.
As successful as he was doing porn, he quit the business in 1988 and started working in sales and video distribution while at the same time did a couple of roles in local theater productions, but he returned to the porn industry in the year 1997. Now he’s a member of the XRCO Legends of Erotica and the AVN Hall of Fame. Since the start of his career Herschel has performed in over 1000 films.
The versatile actor also started a career as a stand up comedian and has appeared in mainstream TV series. In the year 2006 he was the star of “The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue” a play by Neil Simon in which Hershel took the stage name of Max Cohen at the Morgan-Wixson Theater in Santa Monica.
Today Herschel lives in Los Angeles, California, as a single father and divorced from his first wife whose name is Ines Ochoa. They were married from 1983 to 1995. Regarding celebrities he says: “We’re the poorest celebrities you’ll ever meet”. To this day he still tries to make it into mainstream acting.
